At Meachum Village, we know that God has provision for his chosen people. So, we take a position of extreme collective accountability for the state of our people.
That means, at some point, we as a collective group of Black men have to ask ourselves why does every trap set for us work so well?
How is it that white and Arab men— men who are genetically recessive, physically weaker, and intellectually no better than us—can dominate us? This is for honest reflection, not to insult.
Here’s a rundown of the oppression tactics that have targeted Black American men in the United States and how we’ve allowed them to work so well:
Colonialism and the slave trade:
Because Black men kidnapped and sold into slavery other Black men, women, and children of rival tribes. Then, their European customers became their colonizers.
250 years of enslavement (1619-1865):
Because even when black people outnumbered whites 4 to 1 in the south, Black men lacked the unity of mind to organize a successful exodus. Booker T. Washington, in his book The Future of the American Negro, marvels at how compliant Black men continued to be during the Civil War. Those who didn’t sign up for the war or run away, kept on working. Too many slave rebellions had a snitch, another Black slave who craved the power of his oppressor, looking to get a pat from massa. Because many Black men would rather be the buck and populate the plantation, break in other slaves, and turn the other cheek while their women are raped (except Nat Turner, we know), rather than fight to the death for his dignity. (Except the Fanti tribe from Sudan. They didn’t make very good slaves. They’d kill you or kill themselves.)
An inspiring, but failed Post-Reconstruction era (1865-1880):
Because instead of combining the brilliance of John Berry Meachum, W.E.B DuBois, William Trotter, Ida B. Wells, and Booker T Washington into a unified post-slavery agenda, we fell for stacking these brilliant thinkers against each other. (I personally think China learned from our mistake. They had sense enough to combine Booker T and W.E.B.’s approach. That strategy has taken China’s status from “Sir, yes sir” to “Now, what.”)
Ku Klux Klan & Jim Crow (1877-1965):
Because when we tried to build our own communities we either relied on too much influence from rich white people or we built those communities in close proximity to rabid racists in the south. And we’ve let the racial terrorism of our most prosperous communities give us a mindset of generational defeat.
Urban “Renewal” Programs (1950-1974):
For Black cities that weren’t torched by the Klan, the federal government funded fake urban renewal programs. These programs claimed to rebuild shoddy buildings, roads, and other local infrastructure. But all it did was bulldoze homes, businesses, and churches — mostly in predominantly Black communities, including prosperous towns like the Hayti district in North Carolina. Over 300,000 families were displaced. In many cases, Black people fell for the plot and voted for these programs, only to end up homeless.
Civil Rights (1955-1970):
Because we thought it made sense to fight for integration with people who hate us. This shut down more high-performing Black schools and businesses than racial terrorist attacks ever did. Many older Black people would nominate Martin Luther King Jr for sainthood if they could, but even he regretted that the Civil Rights Movement focused more on race rather than economics.

We have fought hard and long for integration, as I believe we should have, and I know we will win, but I have come to believe that we are integrating into a burning house…Until we commit ourselves to ensuring that the underclass is given justice and opportunity, we will continue to perpetuate the anger and violence that tears the soul of this nation.”

Feminism & The White Women’s Movement (1865-present):
The White Women’s Movement started as their retaliation against Black men getting the right to vote before them, according to Dr. Tommy Curry, author of The Man-Not and pioneer of the Black male studies academic discipline. Later, their movement morphed in a quest for sexual freedom and financial parity. This worked because Black men were vacating their roles in the household, so Black women jumped on that bandwagon—and we allowed it.
Welfare Policies (1950s-1970s):
Welfare started in 1935 as a way to support white widows and their children. In the 1950s, Black women were able to enroll, and the death of a spouse was no longer a requirement. Being a single mom because of divorce or desertion qualified you, as long as you were not receiving any other money from a man.
Yes, the Black men of that generation were in a desperate financial situation, but instead of trusting God and defending our roles as fathers, Black men agreed to leave, hide, not sign the birth certificate, conceal any support, and otherwise disappear, just so she could get a check. The welfare policies of the 50s, 60s, and 70s did not kick black men out of the home. They were more like an intense growth hormone for a growing problem of absent fathers that started back in the 1940s among black families migration from the South.
Drugs & Mass incarceration (1980s-present):
This trap works because the best vaccination against delinquency is a Christ-following father. This name mass incarceration is misleading because there’s a specific type of Black man who falls into this trap. Michelle Alexander clearly profiles them in her book, The New Jim Crow: uneducated, unskilled, unemployed, and fatherless.
Child Support & Custody Laws (1975-present):
This trap works because we keep having children with women we aren’t marrying or ripping apart our marriages through divorce. Plus, we’re spreading our bloodlines and our already meager wealth to too many households when we have children with multiple women. This is basic math.
And by the way, incarceration and child support tend to feed off of each other. In many respects, developments in these two public arenas are interconnected, with rising imprisonment contributing to rising child support debt and rising child support debt contributing to rising imprisonment. Parents caught in the middle of these trends can find their post-prison reintegration particularly difficult and challenging, which can then affect their ability to fulfill their financial obligations to their families, secure their own well-being, and stay out of jail. “The average debt of incarcerated fathers is up to three times that of other low-income fathers.” — Child Support and Reentry, National Institute of Justice, 2021
The next trap that we’re seeing Black men dive into is gender ideology. Even Black Christian men are stating their preferred pronouns. D Wade is just the beginning.
At some point, Black men as a collective group have to ask themselves why are we losing these fights. Why do we fall into every trap?

Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’
26 “But when the [k]Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
16 “These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. 3 And these things they will do [l]to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. 4 But these things I have told you, that when [m]the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.
“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
5 “But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He [n]will take of Mine and declare it to you.
16 “A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, because I go to the Father.”
17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 18 They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not [o]know what He is saying.”
19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. 21 A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.
23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God. 28 I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”
29 His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God.”
31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his [p]own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. - Black men, you have rejected God. That’s why you have been neutralized, conquered, and socially castrated.
- Systemic oppression and racism are traumatic and damaging, but they are not the deciding factor in whether you follow Christ. The only thing that determines whether you live for Christ is you—your obedience, your knowledge of scripture, your loyalty to Him.
- At what point do we as Black men stop trying to find acceptance in a system that was designed to destroy us? How do we disconnect from this system?
